Comparing Boston v. SiliconValley & NYC w/ Social Media APIs,TextMining (Group1)
Tuesday, August 14, 2012
6:30 PM To 7:30 PM
Microsoft New England Research and Development Center, 1 Memorial Drive, Cambridge
RSVP at?http://www.meetup.com/Boston-Predictive-Analytics/events/71583112/
Price: $5.00/per person
Refund policy
The $5 fee will first go to pizza (50%), then charity as described below (25%) and some O?Reilly books (25%) to be given away to the group. ?The fee is towards reducing no-shows which range anywhere from 30-50% of rsvps when there is a free event. ?Please note there is a no-pizza, $2.50 for charity, session #2 at 7:45.

Boston's Meetup Tech and Business scene has grown stronger; however Silicon Valley and New York City have both higher adoption and scale. ?What might Boston do to improve its Tech and Biz community landscape?

Social Network Analysis and Machine Learning are used on data pulled from Meetup's API. ?The talk will cover the application-side, analytics using R, and some on pulling data via an API.

Background/Summary:
This talk is a follow-up to the "Utilizing Meetup to Analyze Boston, Silicon Valley and NYC" presentation I gave back February. This extension includes additional Social Network and Machine Learning analysis towards addressing questions such as "What specific Meetup Groups would be helpful for Boston towards improving its tech and biz scene relative to Silicon Valley and NYC?"
There are two main layers of the presentation:
(1) Regional Comparisons: ?Silicon Valley, not surprisingly, has a higher percentage of tech and business groups than either NYC or Boston. ?NYC is slightly above the national average; whereas Boston has an on-par tech scene, though lower than average percentage of business groups. ?This will be explored in more detail.
(2) Analytics: ?Social Network Analysis and Machine Learning as a means to describe different communities. ?"R" (tnet and RTextTools libraries among others) was used with data originating primarily from the Meetup API.
Please note the talk is low on hardcore Computer Science, i.e. there is not going to be discussion of achieving 99.999% accuracy using 20 different models ensembled together ala Amazon or Netflix. ??Please refer to Stanford's Online Learning website (www.coursera.org) which has a great ML course; and both Coursera and Udacity have upcoming Social Network Analysis courses. ?It would be great to have a 2-hour ML event; however this is not the time for it.
The fee, which is to reduce the no-shows/waitlist, will partially be given to charities. ?One thought is to have the donations given to a local non-profit for whom Meetup could be a benefit (much as it has shown to be in tech and biz communities). Interestingly, this brings up a different set of questions including "What is the adoption rate of Meetup in inner cities?" ??As of this time I don't know which organization; however there's time to explore this before the event, and I may be able to go back into the Meetup data and local economic data to see if those sources can be helpful. ?If you are interested in helping out in identifying a non-profit organization, then please let me know.

Hear What's Possible for Sound in Tablets: A Conversation with Dolby Labs

Hear What's Possible for Sound in Tablets: A Conversation with Dolby Labs

The way we engage with media is being transformed by the boom in tablets and other mobile devices. But while the picture quality for movies, TV shows, online video and games is fantastic, most new devices don?t feature high-quality audio. It?s a key issue people are starting to notice: more and more people are demanding high-quality audio. They?re not satisfied. Why?

Poor content quality and hardware limitations like small speakers mean you?re not getting the best listening experience possible. You may have noticed that the speakers on their devices are small, or on the back of the device? or that the volume and dialogue is wacky between the YouTube news clip and the Netflix movie they?re watching on the tablet. Dolby wants to show you why sound is essential to great mobile entertainment on all devices.

Cambridge Residents: Free Home Thermal Images

Have you ever wanted to learn where your home is leaking heat by having an energy auditor come to your home with a thermal camera? ?With that info you then know where to fix your home so it's more comfortable and less expensive to heat. ?However, at $200 or so, the cost of such a thermal scan is a big chunk of change.

HEET Cambridge has now partnered with Sagewell, Inc. to offer Cambridge residents free thermal scans.

Sagewell collects the thermal images by driving through Cambridge in a hybrid vehicle equipped with thermal cameras. ?They will scan every building in Cambridge (as long as it's not blocked by trees or buildings or on a private way). ?Building owners can view thermal images of their property and an analysis online. The information is password protected so that only the building owner can see the results.

Homeowners, condo-owners and landlords can access the thermal images and an accompanying analysis free of charge. Commercial building owners and owners of more than one building will be able to view their images and analysis for a small fee.

The scans will be analyzed in the order they are requested.

Go to Sagewell.com. ?Type in your address at the bottom where it says "Find your home or building" and press return. ?Then click on "Here" to request the report.

That's it. ?When the scans are done in a few weeks, your building will be one of the first to be analyzed. The accompanying report will help you understand why your living room has always been cold and what to do about it.

With knowledge, comes power (or in this case saved power and money, not to mention comfort).

Panic Disorder Therapy Evaluation ? The Linden Strategy ...

Hello James here, and you?re reading my report on what I truly seriously considered The Linden Method. Why am I writing this? well, when I searched the Web for an anxiety management programme I was confronted by quite frankly an enormous number of products and services all claiming to ?remedy? anxiety disorder. Some appeared corporate and elegant, others didn?t appear to offer anything more than you may find on a typical web-search AND wanted you to pay for it.I know about anxiety condition, having suffered with it for 17 years. I am aware how it influences your daily life. I knew what kind of product I was trying to find, something private, something straightforward and something that seemed realistic, built sence and appeared to be what kind could work. That?s when I came across The Linden Method. So I thought that I would write analysis The Linden Method, a product that I?ve obtained, a product that?s worked for me, to simply help any of you who?re in exactly the same condition that I was ? an anxiety person. I?ll be exceeding the good and the negative things, provide details of what the process is and what it can do for you.The Linden Method is a proven, rapid recovery from anxiety disorder, panic attacks, OCD and agoraphobia offered by Charles Linden who suffered from anxiety and panic disorder for 25 years. His strategy healed him rapidly and permanently and it?s pure. I examine Charles Lindens? story and discovered that I might relate with most of what he had experienced. The symptoms of helplessness, distress and having been multiple-medicated by physicians who don?t comprehend the condition was undoubtedly something that I also had experienced. The Linden Method has aided over 136,000 ex-sufferers to permanently and completely remove panic attacks, anxiety condition, OCD, fears and all the related symptoms that had previously dominated and ruled their lives. What is surprising concerning the strategy is that you?re told that you?re not sick. Not literally, not mentally. The Linden Method also claims that it will benefit every individual who employs it correctly ? without exceptions. Here I must stress that you must follow The Linden Method correctly. All of us want a ?quick-fix? cure and many are offered online that do not work. This system does work, however you must do some work too. Fortunately not a great deal of are the method is goes via an simple to follow detailed programme of recovery. So that?s the downside ? and I believe that you?ll agree, it is not a big downside and it certainly does not reflect the performance of the solution. The upside is that The Linden Method has helped thousands of individuals who suffer with the mildest to probably the most serious panic conditions.Okay so here?s how it works; You can sometimes obtain a published pack for $177.00 Click Here for more information. Or a download for $99.00. Both contain the very same material. The Linden Method works on the principle that a small wood in the brain called the amygdala is hundreds of responsible for your anxiety. In anxiety sufferers it is effectively ?switched-on? completely causing incorrect and high degrees of anxiety. Under normal circumstances (yes I said that word that all psychologists hate ? ?normal?!) the amygdala is switched-on in times of real danger, it activates the ?fight or flight? reaction in us which deactivates when the danger has passed. As I stated earlier, the amygdala is completely switched-on in anxiety victims answering risk whether it is actual or perceived creating unacceptable anxiety. Until such time that it?s needed, such to be faced with actual danger.I determined upon the 200+ page handbook with enclosed CD and DVD bundle, The Linden Method plan directly targets the amygdala forever switching it off. Notes onto send back once again to at a later time In the same way an individual choice as I needed something which I might make. The down load is just as powerful and is useful because you can begin work on your restoration straight away. The Linden Method manual is well laid out, describes carefully why you have anxiety condition, the unwanted effects of medication and shows you in a straight forward straightforward way why your condition affects you. It gives you a step-by-step programme to follow, which when used correctly will eliminate anxiety. In addition to The Linden Method programme you get:Introduction to The Linden Method: A guide by Charles Linden on how best to implement the strategy correctly. Charles Linden is interesting and encouraging and importantly ? Charles Linden knows that which you are receiving.
The Visualisations: These are an accumulation of relaxation exercises that I came across to be quite effective in relaxing and soothing you.
Before panic attacks actually start the Panic Eliminator: Processes to end panic attacks.
The 9 Pillars CD: This I discovered to be an extremely successful 9 level information to lead a panic free life.
Stop Anxiety and Panic Attacks: A group of particularly created heavy relaxation workouts from Charles Linden.

Could ?liking? something on Facebook get you fired?

That?s what six sheriff?s deputies say happened to them after they ?liked? the political opponent of their boss. A district judge ruled that Facebook likes aren't protected speech, but the case is being appealed.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / August 10, 2012

Six deputies at the sheriff?s department in Hampton County, Va., say that they were fired for 'liking' their boss's political opponent on Facebook.

Facebook and the American Civil Liberties Union are challenging a Virginia judge?s ruling that determined ?liking? certain content on Facebook is not protected speech for public employees.

In April, US District Judge Raymond Jackson in Norfolk, Va., threw out a wrongful termination suit by six former employees of the Hampton Sheriff?s Department. They said their firing last year was retaliation for ?liking? the political opponent of Hampton Sheriff B.J. Roberts in an election.

Judge Jackson said that, while public employees can speak as citizens about public concerns, meaning it is constitutionally protected speech, the privilege does not extend to symbolic expression ? such as clicking a like button to follow a certain cause, person, or group.

?Simply liking a Facebook page is insufficient. It is not the kind of substantive statement that has previously warranted constitutional protection,? Jackson wrote in his ruling.

Sheriff Roberts fired the deputies following the election, which he won. According to the appeal brief for the deputies, he had issued a warning before the election that they stay off the Facebook page of his opponent, which they said indicated their firings were linked to their social-media actions. Roberts told the Associated Press that the terminations resulted from poor job performance and that their actions online ?hindered the harmony and efficiency of the office.?

The six deputies are appealing the court ruling to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. On Monday, the ACLU filed an amicus brief supporting the appeal. That brief describes Jackson?s conclusion, distinguishing symbolic action from written postings, as ?erroneous.?

?Under the district court?s reasoning, affixing a bumper sticker to your car, pinning a campaign pin to your shirt, or placing a sign on your lawn would be devoid of meaning absent further information, and therefore not entitled to constitutional protection because of the minimal effort these actions require. All of these acts are, of course, constitutionally protected,? the brief reads.

In its own amicus brief, filed Monday, Facebook said Jackson?s ruling was ?based on an apparent misunderstanding of the way Facebook works? and that the ?resulting decision clashes with decades of precedent and bedrock First Amendment principles.? The social network tallies about 3 billion likes and comments every day from 500 million users, the company says.

The judge?s ruling ?can have a big effect in narrowing what we define as speech and putting on notice all kinds of employees, including some in the private sector, that speech isn?t speech unless? it?s oral or written, says Bruce Barry, a professor of management and sociology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and author of ?Speechless: the Erosion of Free Expression in the American Workplace.?

Employees in the private sector generally face stricter rules regarding social-media use, with some employers monitoring online behavior and even, in some cases, restricting social-media access in the workplace. However, those policies have been challenged when they?ve been linked to retaliation against the employee, and in some cases, the courts have ruled that specific policies are too broadly written.

Provisions under the National Labor Relations Act and Electronic Communications Privacy Act have provided whistle-blowers protections in these kinds of cases.

Last year, the National Labor Relations Board settled with ambulance company American Medical Response following the company?s firing of a Connecticut driver after she posted negative comments about her supervisor on Facebook. The negative comments, the NLRB said, were protected speech under federal labor laws, and the company had to rewrite its social-media policy to correct some provisions that were ?overly broad? and ?unlawful.?

Public employees also have the right to express themselves online, but are typically not allowed to publicly campaign while at work, says Marcus Messner, a journalism professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond who specializes in social-media research. Mr. Messner says he does not expect Jackson?s ruling to be upheld but says if it is, ?it will change how people interact on social media.?

?If this ruling is upheld, employees have to be worried that a very basic communication on a social-media platform can lead to their firing,? he says. ?Most people know they should not be talking bad about their job or boss, but to have a political expression in your private life lead to your firing ? I think that would change how we communicate online.?

It is not yet clear whether the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals will hear the case.

My Reviewer Experience of Rembrandt:

Day 1 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste. At night I flossed my teeth with Reach Total Care, and used the 2 Hour Whitening Kit. I have to say I enjoyed the minty taste of the toothpaste. The floss was different, unlike any other floss I have used. It was stretchy, making it easy to use. The 2 hour whitening trays were super fun to customize to my teeth.

Rembrandt Review

Day 2 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste. At night I flossed and then used the Intense Stain Dissolving Strips. Honestly, I have to say I thought it was a little hard to get the strips on my teeth. I slept with these strips on and in the morning they were gone.

Day 3 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste. At night flossed and used the dissolving strips.

Rembrandt Review

Day 4 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste. At night I flossed and used the 2 Hour Whitening Kit. I have to say by day 4 I could see a difference in my teeth. Although I think I left the 2 hour whitening trays on for too long during one session, and my teeth were sensitive in the morning.

Day 5 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste.

Rembrandt Review

Day 6-8 of using the Rembrandt system: I brushed my teeth in the am and pm with the Rembrandt Stain Intense Toothpaste. At night I used the dissolving strips.

Rembrandt Review

Result:

My overall result from using the Rembrandt system is happy! I now have noticeably whiter teeth. I would recommend this product to my friends and family. My mom and my sister even tried the product and could see the noticeable difference in their smiles. Thank you Rembrandt for giving me the chance to try your products. I plan to continue to use the Rembrandt system!

Easy Home Renovation Ideas for Beginners - George Slavov

Do you want to give your home a fresh look? If so, there are lots of home renovation ideas out there that might suit your preferences, as well as your budget. Although a lot of home renovation projects can be quite expensive, you can also look for great alternatives that come at a lower cost. Just take the time to list down the possible expenses that you might incur to avoid going overboard with your budget. Even beginners can get plenty of ideas so long as they are willing to read and research. Here are a few ideas for improving and renovating your home.

?

Give Your Floors a Boost

Most individuals actually focus on repainting the walls when it comes to home renovation projects. But did you know that the flooring system also has a huge impact in the overall ambience and atmosphere of your room? If you think that your room has become very boring, chances are, your flooring system might also need a boost. Try to make a few changes with the flooring in accordance to the room?s functionality. For example, if you need to renovate the room of your kids, you might want to place some play mats or a highly comfortable carpeting system. In your living room area, you might also want to think about getting laminated or hardwood floor systems. These days, you will be able to choose from a wide range of colors and hues; therefore, you should have no problems finding a flooring system that will work well with the theme of your room.

?

Add Storage Areas

Another tip to renovating and improving your home is to make it more useful and functional. Often times, people have highly disorganized homes because of the lack of storage spaces. You can actually increase the functionality of a room by simply adding some shelves, cabinets and drawers. You can try to look for cabinets from furniture stores and shops, or you can also purchase some DIY shelves that you can place against the walls. By adding more storage spaces, you will actually be freeing your home from unnecessary clutter. This is definitely a great way to boost and renovate your home.

?

Add Some Accent Furniture Pieces or Items

When it comes to home renovation, you do not really need to stick with the major concepts in order to boost the overall look of your home. As a matter of fact, you can simply add some accent furniture, fixtures or other related items to make a room more sophisticated and stylish. For example, why don?t you try adding a beautiful side table in your living room? You can also look for a stylish and chic lamp that will not only add to the beauty of your home, but will also improve your room?s lighting system. You can also add a beautiful painting as a main centerpiece for your room for added style and sophistication. Although these accent materials might seem simple, they will really add a lot of character and style to your home.

From Oscar's Olympics to Pistorius' Paralympics

LONDON (AP) ? As he left Olympic Stadium, Oscar Pistorius stopped for a moment and looked back.

The double-amputee runner turned to take in the crowd of 80,000 and reflect on his victory in a four-year fight to compete at the London Games against the world's best able-bodied athletes.

___

EDITOR'S NOTE: AP Sports Writer Gerald Imray, based in Johannesburg, has been covering double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius' quest to compete against able-bodied athletes at the Olympics for the last two years. A day after the South African ran in the 4x400-meter relay final, Pistorius spoke to Imray about his experiences and what is next.

___

"It's something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life," Pistorius told The Associated Press on Saturday, thinking back to his debut on the biggest track stage in the world. "It's been absolutely phenomenal. In a way, I'm glad the pressure's over."

But there's still more business for the "Blade Runner" in London.

In a few weeks, the South African will be back at the same stadium on his carbon-fiber blades for the Paralympics. He won't be a sideshow. He'll be the main attraction.

Pistorius is the defending champion in the 100, 200 and 400 meters ? and he'll be expected to win four gold medals this time. He also will be on South Africa's 4x100 relay team.

If he wins them all, he'll go home with more gold than Usain Bolt.

"I've always wanted to be at the Olympics and Paralympics at the same games," Pistorius said, still glowing after running the anchor leg in the 4x400 final Friday.

That's soon to come. He also has "the challenge," as he calls it, of defending his 100-meter title. It is going to be a big challenge, too, because Pistorius probably faces the biggest threat yet to his dominance of disabled running when he lines up for the marquee race.

Since the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, Pistorius has become a 400 specialist in his attempt to compete at the able-bodied Olympics. He also shed about 25 pounds (12 kilograms) to suit the longer distance.

Meanwhile, Paralympic sprinting rivals and single amputees Jerome Singleton of the United States and Jonnie Peacock of Britain have focused solely on the 100 and unseating Pistorius over the short race.

"The 100 is going to be the tough one," Pistorius said. "I've really changed in the last four years. I've dropped a lot of weight to accommodate the efficiency for the 400 meters and the guys have been training hard for that 100. I've got to defend my title there and it's going to be a challenge."

Singleton beat Pistorius at last year's world championships, handing the South African his first defeat in the 100 in seven years. The 19-year-old Peacock broke the world record in the single-amputee class in June at 10.85 seconds. Pistorius' world record for double amputees is 10.91.

A third challenger and another single amputee is South African teammate Arnu Fourie. He also has run impressive times and beat Pistorius over 100 meters back home in March.

It's going to be a challenge, sure, but the 25-year-old Pistorius has gotten used to them over the years.

Bans, court cases, battles to qualify ? and, most recently, a crash by a teammate in the 4x400 relay semifinals this week that almost ended Oscar's Olympics early.

"We won't hopefully have those (dramas) in the future," he said, laughing, outside the athletes village. "This has been one of the most special moments of my life and I'm sure the Paralympics later this month is going to be exactly the same for me."

Then, it'll be time to rest and reflect until next season. And think about what else he can achieve.

"Next year we've got the world championships in Moscow," said Pistorius, who already has a silver medal with South Africa in the 4x400 relay from last year's worlds. "Looking forward to that as well."

With Three Months to Go, Uncertainty Reigns for Undecided Voters

Lyn Vaccaro admits it: "I'm officially an undecided voter."

That's a big confession for the 50-year-old single mom in Milwaukee, who says she has spent "a significant amount of time as a well-known conservative."

But Vaccaro, who works at a natural foods store, says she now feels that she can't put her support behind either candidate.

"It's been quite a while since I've felt so ambiguous about something so profoundly important," she adds.

In a first-person account for Yahoo News, Vaccaro writes that a few key issues too important to ignore have her split about her choice in the presidential election. President Barack Obama has failed her on jobs and economy. He also simply can't tell the truth, she says.

"We need decent-paying jobs that provide consistent work to run our households. I'm not seeing that in the current administration. I'm not happy," Vaccaro writes. "This isn't to mention the lack of candor regarding Gitmo, Fast and Furious, and Obama's general apathy regarding the real estate crisis and our more-than-failing economy. I desperately feel the need to vote for someone I trust and can count on to be consistent."

But, for her, Romney isn't forthcoming, either.

She writes: "With Election Day nearing, I find too many speeches -- like the one in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday -- that leave me feeling he's frequently changed his conservative stances on some issues, notably health care and Romneycare. It's also unsettling to hear some of his positions regarding abortion. In his early political career, he appears to be pro-choice. Will the real Mitt Romney please reveal himself?"

With three months to go in the election, Vaccaro is one of a handful of undecided voters -- many in swing states -- whom Yahoo News polled about their presidential leanings. Over the next 90 days, they'll revisit their thinking and tell readers whether their decisions have shifted and why. Here's a look at how other undecided Americans are seeing the campaign:

"I'm dreading November," Columbus, Ohio, public school teacher S. Alexander Cooke writes. "Why? Come Election Day, I'll cast my vote either to re-elect President Obama or to replace him with Mitt Romney. Either way I'll end up feeling like I'm the only one of the three of us who's willing to compromise."

Cooke, 34, says he was leaning toward Romney in early June. He writes that he saw the former Massachusetts governor as more committed to deep budget cuts to pay down the nation's debt.

"Yet in the last two weeks," Cooke writes, "I've begun to realize that neither candidate appears willing to do what I see as necessary to effectuate real change: compromise."

He says he should be a shoo-in vote for the Democratic president. But Obama's inability to move beyond name-calling is unfortunate.

"I mean, I'm supposed to vote for a presidential candidate whose biggest offering last week was to try to frighten me with a story of take-from-the-poor-to-feed-the-rich "Romney Hood"? Sorry, I'll need better than that," Cooke laments.

And Romney? "[He] seems as interested in teasing his vice-presidential pick as telling me why I should vote for him even though we disagree on gay marriage, tax rates for the wealthy, and federal education policy."

Obama's too fiscally liberal. Romney's not socially liberal enough. So says Orlando, Fla., voter Stephanie Larochelle, a 32-year-old insurance-sector worker.

"For now, I'm going to defer my decision," Larochelle writes. "It would be nice to see a strong independent contender somewhere in the middle. But at this point in the game, it's unlikely an independent underdog would win the race."

A few months ago, she says she was "almost positive" Obama earned her vote a second time. The country's economic stagnation is the key culprit. His emphasis on jobs, Larochelle says, isn't in areas she thinks will see robust growth.

Romney's economic strategies more mirror her own: "I think now is the time to save money, not spend it, and Romney plans on cutting federal spending and capping non-discretionary spending." However, his social stances (gay marriage and abortion in particular) are tough to swallow.

"Because of that," she says, "I find myself biased against Romney from the start."

In Las Vegas, Michael Taylor is still gunning for Ron Paul. And he writes that he's hopeful Romney will include the erstwhile presidential candidate in some fashion during the Republican National Convention.

For Taylor, the GOP primary ended too soon. "Personally, I was hooked on that soap opera and wish it could have gone on even longer. After such an interesting lineup, the competition seemed to crumble rather quickly." And Romney's hand-picking by the party's poobahs took the fun out of the election. He asks: "Who wants a flip-flopper who is spinning like a weather vane in a tornado?"

On Obama, Taylor writes that he worries about the administration's foreign entanglements. He checks them off like a grocery list: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Iran. Then there are his concerns of drones over America and an increasingly armed police force.

Plus: "There's no sense the economy has improved," Taylor writes.

So, it's back to Ron Paul for this 60-year-old former commercial artist.

"All along, I had hoped Romney would find a way to reach out to Paul's supporters. I hardly think offering a speaking slot at the convention in Tampa for Rand Paul is adequate."

"I don't know whom I will choose," Virginian Lyn Brooks writes. "But either way, I will probably be holding my nose when I make my selection."

The 44-year-old writer and novelist voted for Obama in 2008. And while change arrived, many changes weren't for the better. She writes that she disagrees with the president's policy of raising taxes on the rich: "The answer lies in increasing private sector employment, particularly in the small-business sector."

His energy policies aren't appealing, either: "Living near Roanoke near the coalfields of Virginia, I have seen firsthand the economic devastation caused by Obama's desire to harm the coal industry. We need to use all of our energy sources -- oil, natural gas, coal, renewable."

Brooks isn't sold on Romney, though. She would've voted for Ron Paul or Tim Pawlenty in a heartbeat.

"If either had," she says, "I would not be an undecided voter and could vote for the Republican this November with no hesitation."

The president's change hasn't come to Michigan if you ask Royal Oak resident Mark Vansetti.

"We have suffered through the brunt of the economic downturn and, therefore, I pay close attention to how each candidate campaigns on the issues that will affect my community economically," the 33-year-old Detroit-area attorney writes.

Unemployment is 8.6 percent in Michigan, a bit higher than the national average, in a state Obama is counting on. For undecided Michiganders like Vansetti, that's not good enough: "Unfortunately, unemployment is significantly higher than Obama promised it would be with his stimulus, and even higher than he promised it would be without the stimulus. Instead, federal government still spent all that stimulus money; seemingly it was for nothing."

He's leaning toward Romney.

"Not because Obama was wrong on the unemployment rate, but because Obama has not uttered a single word to acknowledge that he was wrong," Vansetti writes. "Instead, much of the campaigning I have seen from the Obama camp has been less about what he would do differently in the next four years and more about where Mitt Romney keeps his money. Where Romney keeps his money is of no consequence to me. (It's not in my pocket, I can assure you that)."

The Americans had a huge haul at Olympic Stadium, collecting seven athletics medals on Wednesday night.

Medal winners were:

Allyson Felix (gold) and Carmelita Jeter (bronze) in 200 meters

Aries Merritt (gold) and Jason Richardson (silver) in 110 meter hurdles

Brittney Reece (gold) and Janay DeLoach (bronze) in long jump

Lashinda Demus (silver) in 400 meter hurdles.

Here's what some of them had to say about the big night:

Reece: "This means a lot to our country. We're on track for 30 medals. We're getting some unexpected medals."

Jeter: "The only thing that mattered to me was to get back on that podium, to get us some more medals because I believe China was beating us before we lined up tonight. I definitely wanted to make sure we got our medals up. We collected!"
