Katie Couric Reveals Bulimia Battle on Talk Show - iVillage

They're from different generations, but Katie Couric and Demi Lovato share an all-too-common problem. While interviewing Lovato on her daytime chat show Katie, Couric revealed that she, too, had struggled with bulimia as a young woman.

"I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," said Couric, 55.

The news anchor was binging and purging while attending the University of Virginia, and she remembers well what she was experiencing at the time.

"I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that?s wrong, you?re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself," she recalled. "Whether it?s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn?t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that."

Couric eventually overcame her eating disorder with the help of a therapist. Lovato, too, went to treatment for her eating disorder, and says it was extremely challenging.

"Treatment was so difficult at first. I remember walking around saying, 'I'm in prison!'" Lovato, 20, told Couric. "But they needed to have those strict rules in order for me to understand how sick I was."

In fact, the "Give Your Heart a Break" singer says that she only recently began to feel comfortable in her body.

"I've been getting used to the changes in my body. When I got out of treatment I gained 30 pounds, and my weight fluctuated a lot and I had a really hard time dealing with it," Lovato admitted. "Obviously I'm still going to deal with it for the rest of my life, but I'm in a good place now."

As a web extra, Couric talked to therapist Dr. Cynthia Bulik about how eating disorders are treated. Watch the conversation below!
