(PACRC), Sea Grant Extension (West Hawaii); non-tenure track, temporary, Federal funds, full-time, 11 month appointment, to begin
approximately January 2013, pending position clearance and availability of funds.
Duties: Under the general supervision of the PACRC Director, serve West Hawai'i Island by developing an innovative outreach and extension program that supports sustainable coastal development, a safe and sustainable seafood supply, hazard resilient coastal communities, sustainable coastal tourism, and coastal ecosystem health. Specific duties include: Develop and coordinate the implementation and evaluation of extension and educational/outreach projects on Hawai'i Island with emphasis on policy development for sustainable land use practices and building design, coastal and marine resource management, water quality, ocean recreation, shoreline development, and coastal hazard resilience; serve as a technology-transfer and education/outreach link among community residents, island visitor and development industries, county, state, and federal agencies and the University of Hawai'i for best management practices as they relate to coastal and marine ecosystems throughout Hawai'i and the nation; provide or support lectures, workshops and seminars to community groups, schools, and volunteer programs on a variety of topics including but not limited to near shore ecosystems, land use practices and human impacts as they relate to coastal and marine resources; develop and maintain partnerships with Hawai'i Island policy makers, community, county and state agency leaders and cultivate their involvement in solution-oriented sustainable natural resource use and land use practices projects; assist UH Sea Grant's various centers in coordinating inter-governmental programs, including those sponsored by county, state and federal agencies; oversee effective public engagement volunteer programs that produce supplementary data sought by university or agency programs; oversee the distillation and distribution of natural resource surveys, human use, and socio-cultural data appropriate to Hawai'i; administer and manage a West Hawai'i field office including hiring and supervising an office/projects staff member, procuring and maintaining equipment, supplies, resource materials, and contact databases; assist stakeholders in identifying research needs with application to sustainable resource and land use practices, and facilitate appropriate research within the university system to address Hawai'i Island needs and issues; write grant proposals, manage and evaluate grant projects, and hire contract personnel as appropriate for project implementation.
Minimum qualifications: A Master's degree from a college or university of recognized standing with major work in education, marine science, coastal resource management, or a related field. A minimum of three years successful experience in extension/educational activities relevant to a marine-related field. Able to exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for developing a dynamic program of extension, outreach and education. Proven ability to work well with diverse stakeholders, including county extension and Sea Grant Agents and related agencies.
Desirable Qualifications: Successful experience in establishing professional relationships with island agencies and non-governmental entities. Demonstrated experience successfully engaging island communities in sustainable, community-based resource management activities. Working knowledge of Hawai'i's coral reef ecosystems and understanding of the challenges facing island communities in maintaining coral reef health. Demonstrated ability to write, be awarded and manage grants.
Pay Range: S2 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
